Beginning the process of Green Home Certification

I am attempting to get our home certified Green by the Florida Green Building Coalition. I am seeking this designation for a few reasons. One is to receive some sort of acknowledgement that my attempt to build a green home in FL is somehow fulfilled. I began this endeavor back in June 2006 when we left Brooklyn, NY for Englewood, FL. We chose this area because we found 2 acres on Gottfried Creek (hence the main blog title of GottfriedGreen.com) and we fell in love with the property. When it came to building a green house we went to the green professionals to guide us through. We spent a lot of money getting started only to find that paying for all things green in such a niche market was no where close to affordable for us. I realized if the project was going to work before green building became mainstream and affordable for everyone, I would have to navigate the project myself. Sorting through the required Green Home Designation checklist will help me to see where I failed, where I could have met the requirement in retrospect (if I knew then what I know now sort of thing) and to see where I succeeded. This is what I hope to find out and share though this new blog, Gottfried Green Home.

About Gottfried Green Home

I created this blog as a companion blog to GottfriedGreen.com which started in June 2006 and chronicles our attempt to build a green home in Southwest FL. Now that our house is nearing completion my goal is to have the house certified green through the FGBC. The Florida Green Building Coalition offers Green Home Certification for homes that fulfill requirements in 8 categories: Energy, Water, Lot Choice, Site, Health, Materials, Disaster Mitigation and a General category. They've created a user friendly Green Home Checklist Tool which makes it easy to review what is required for each category and also provides a score for each. I will be using that excel spreadsheet as well as posting the required documentation to support each item I believe we've accomplished. As a FGBC green home certifying agent, I will be able to submit all this information to be reviewed. If we succeed the home will be designated Green by the coalition.
